Buy Handmade – 22.2.12

Buy Handmade – we hear it all the time don’t we. Support Self Representing Artists – what does it all really mean?

Well, what does it mean to you? Do you value something that has been handcrafted by an individual that has a passion for what they do and the conviction and skill to go and do it. Do you like to be a little different from the crowd, be individual, and have pieces of art that you are proud and fond of. That’s what handmade Lampwork and jewellery is all about – it’s art and it’s individual, and it’s been born unto the world by someone who has a passion for what they do. There is a skill involved and when you wear or display your pieces its because you appreciate these qualities. Don’t be afraid to be unique and stand out!

Not that there’s anything wrong with nipping to the shop and picking yourself up a little of what you fancy of course – but you know that you’re not going to be the only one wearing that piece, and that little Miss Copy-Cat from admin will see it and get herself one and you’ll no longer feel so individual and special. Nobody can look at a handmade piece and say, ‘Ooh I’ve got that exact same one!’

Supporting Self Representing Artists – well that’s simple, that’s about the people who aren’t backed by big companies – we are just individuals trying to make a living with our art. We may have space in galleries or local shops but buying direct cuts out the middle-man and makes everyone happy ! You’re supporting a local company and stimulating our economy in the process. This job isn’t exactly paying for holidays in Barbados, we do it because we love it and to hear/see the delight in someone who finds that special piece that speaks to them – knowing it was made from our very own hands – makes it all worthwhile.

Some of us are mothers, some of us are just passionate about following our dream – we all appreciate the opportunity to do so, and to stay true to ourselves and our passion. We work hard – not always the conventional hours of an office job, but running a business like this takes alot of input and many many hours. It’s a common misconception amongst our friends and family that we sit about drinking tea and watching tv all day. In reality we probably put in more hours than we would at an office job. It may not seem like it, but that’s just because we are enjoying ourselves in the process!

So, with every purchase you make, you can be assured that the artisan thanks you from the bottom of their heart for recognising something in their art. Support individual talent, be unique and true to yourself, and above all – follow your own dream!
